‘Hava, Maryam, Ayesha’ to represent Afghanistan at Oscar

Iranian-Afghan feature ‘Hava, Maryam, Ayesha’ is to represent Afghanistan at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Iranian-Afghan feature film ‘Hava, Maryam, Ayesha’, by Iranian producer Katayoun Shahabi, has been selected to represent Afghanistan at the 2020 Academy Awards (commonly known as the Oscars) ceremony.

Directed by Sahraa Karimi, ‘Hava, Maryam, Ayesha’ narrates the story of “three Afghan women from different social backgrounds, living in Kabul, who are facing a big challenge in their lives”, according to a synopsis for the film.

The film’s Iranian producer considers it as a serious step and new perspective in Afghanistan’s film industry which could represent the new generation of Afghan filmmakers well.

The post-production stage of the movie took place in Iran.

Last month, Iranian feature-length documentary ‘Finding Farideh’, co-directed by Azadeh Mousavi and Kourosh Ataee, was selected to represent Iran at the ceremony.

The story of 'Finding Farideh' begins with a newspaper report which reads a young woman who was adopted by a Dutch family is looking for her biological parents.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will take place in the city of Los Angeles in the US on February 9, 2020.
